Ware County Jail Overview
Ware County Jail is operated by the Ware County Sheriff's Office. It serves the county jail role for people arrested by sheriff's deputies, Waycross Police, and other local agencies before release, court action, local sentence service, or transfer. The sheriff's jail page is the best operating-agency source for jail reception, visitation, mail, phone, and commissary details. A separate Georgia Department of Corrections directory entry lists a different jail address and phone, but the sheriff source is primary because the sheriff operates the local jail and publishes the jail administrator contact.
The sheriff page places the jail and sheriff office at 3487 Harris Road, Waycross, GA 31503. The general sheriff number is 912-287-4326, while jail reception and jail administration route through Captain Anthony "Tony" Youmans at 912-287-4323. Ware County Jail is not the same as Ware State Prison, even though both facilities sit on Harris Road. The jail roster covers current local jail custody and recent bookings. State-sentenced prisoners move through the Georgia Department of Corrections system and should be searched through GDC instead.
The sheriff jail information page shows the public services that are documented for Ware County Jail, including HomeWAV video visitation, the jail phone system, inmate inbox messaging, inmate mail handling, and commissary deposit access. It does not publish a construction year, pod layout, booking-desk hours, accepted bond-payment methods, or a sheriff-published capacity. Those gaps matter because family members should confirm any time-sensitive question with jail staff before travel or payment.
Ware County Jail Capacity
Ware County Jail capacity and population figures come from the Vera Incarceration Trends county dataset, not from a sheriff-published jail dashboard. Vera reports a rated Ware County jail capacity of 510 in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 rows. The same source reports a 2026 jail population of 412 and a 2026 pretrial population of 312. These figures describe the county jail population, not Ware State Prison's GDC capacity.
The 2026 jail population was about four-fifths of the 510 capacity figure. Vera's recent rows also show 403.75 jail population in 2025 and 375.5 in 2024, so the county jail count rose across those rows. Because Ware County did not publish a live public population dashboard in the research set, daily head counts should be treated as changing custody data and checked through the roster or jail reception.
Ware County Jail Roster Search
The official online path for Ware County Jail current custody is the Ware County OffenderIndex roster, linked by the sheriff as the current jail population. It has tabs for Current Inmates, Bookings Over Last 24 Hours, and Inmates by Booking Date. Search fields include first name, last name, date range, and an option to include previous inmates on the booking-date tab. The portal is free to view, with no login or payment visible in the captured research.
The OffenderIndex current jail population screen is shown in the county screenshot captured for the roster research.
The tabs matter because a person booked very recently may be easier to find under the last-24-hours view, while older booking-date searches can use a name and date range.
- Open the sheriff-linked OffenderIndex roster and start with Current Inmates for a current Ware County Jail custody check.
- Enter a first name, last name, or both. If spelling is uncertain, try fewer letters or search by booking date.
- Use Bookings Over Last 24 Hours when the arrest is new and the current list does not show the person yet.
- Open the booking-date tab for a date range search, and use the previous-inmate option only when a released person must be checked.
- Read the expanded record for charge, warrant, court, bond, release, and visitation fields when those values are populated.
Roster details can include booked status, sex, height, weight, address, arrest date and time, days in jail, total bond, warrant number, counts, statute, description, offense type, court, release date, visitation schedule, inmate ID, and age. The inspected Ware County OffenderIndex source had photos configured off, so the roster should not be described as a mugshot gallery. For a broader roster walk-through, the Ware County jail inmate records page covers the search fields in more detail.
Ware County Jail Contact
Use the sheriff's jail contact information when the roster is unclear, when a visit must be scheduled, or when a family member needs current communication rules. Ware County government also provides a county main line as a fallback because the county site warns that some phone numbers may have changed after a phone-provider transition. Jail staff should be asked to confirm custody, release status, bond instructions, visit approval, and any lobby requirements before a visitor drives to Harris Road.

For unpublished records, the Ware County open-records channel is the county fallback. The county site links an official open-records request page and PDF, while Georgia's open-government guidance explains the general three-business-day response rule, fee limits, and public-records framework. Records requests should be specific enough to identify the person, date, and type of record sought.
Ware County Jail Visits
Ware County Jail visitation is largely video-based through HomeWAV, and the sheriff page says no contact visits are permitted. The key local detail is the no-cost on-site HomeWAV or AmTel option. A visitor may use that option only with a prior approved appointment through jail staff, and the visitor must be in the jail lobby at or before the approved appointment time. Approval depends on staff discretion, staffing level, inmate classification or discipline, equipment, and available space.
The Ware sheriff visitation page is the operating source for jail visit rules, phone options, mail, and commissary links.
The sheriff page should be checked before a visit because Ware County did not publish a fixed day-by-day family visitation table in the research set.
| Visit Type | Schedule or Access | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Family and friend visits | One visit per visitation period; exact public schedule not published | Primarily HomeWAV video visitation |
| No-cost on-site HomeWAV or AmTel | Call Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM, at 912-287-4323 | Prior approved appointment required through jail staff |
| Legal counsel and ministers | Normal hours, with the most privacy available | May be delayed during programs or services |
| Contact visits | Not available | Jail administrators or command staff may deny a visit |
Classification is the jail's internal custody review for housing, safety, discipline, and program status. A person on restriction or discipline may have fewer visit options even when a family member has an appointment. Note: Call 912-287-4323 before traveling because visit access can change with staffing, classification, equipment, or jail operations.
Ware County Jail Mail
Ware County Jail's mail rules are unusually specific. The sheriff page states that inmate mail is collected daily and forwarded to the United States Postal Service within 24 hours after receipt from the inmate unless one of several exceptions applies. Mail may be held when it is deposited on a weekend, held as evidence, contains contraband, or includes plans for escape, threats of harm, riot or disorder plans, or plans involving explosive, incendiary, or pyrotechnic devices.
| Service | Provider or Detail | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Outgoing inmate mail collected daily and sent to USPS within 24 hours unless an exception applies | Current addressing format and rejected-mail rules | |
| Phone | ATN, Inc.; customer service 800-849-6081 | Blocks, call completion, and billing issues |
| Inmate inbox | Monitored electronic messaging described by sheriff | Current approved use through jail reception |
| Commissary deposits | CommissaryDeposit.com | State, facility, inmate ID or name, and any current fees |
The sheriff links commissary deposits to CommissaryDeposit.com, but the research did not locate a Ware-specific fee table. The vendor says users select the state and facility and then identify the inmate by ID or name. Deposited funds may be subject to normal collections for debts owed by the inmate. For phone service, ATN handles common blocks tied to facility rules, called-party requests, provider billing blocks, nonpayment, new exchanges, or fraud concerns.
Ware County Jail Booking
Ware County did not publish a step-by-step booking policy. The local flow can still be read from the roster, court contacts, and sheriff services. A person arrested by a deputy, Waycross Police, or another local agency may be taken to Ware County Jail for intake unless cited, released, or moved to another agency. Intake is the jail process that records identity, custody status, property, medical or safety screening, and the administrative record used for custody tracking.
Once the jail or roster vendor publishes the entry, OffenderIndex may show arrest date and time, days in jail, total bond, charges, warrant number, statute, court, release date, and visitation data. A booking charge is not the same as a final conviction. Magistrate Court is the local court of entry into the criminal justice system and may handle first appearance and bond issues. Holds or detainers can stop release even when a bond amount appears on the roster.
Ware County Jail Records
Ware County Jail records should be matched to the right system. Current county jail custody is searched on the sheriff-linked OffenderIndex roster. Formal court charges are handled through the Ware County court system after arrest. Sentenced state-prison custody belongs in the GDC locator, and federal or immigration custody belongs in BOP, USMS, or ICE channels. The systems can overlap during a transfer or hold, but they are not interchangeable.
The source conflict on the jail address is worth noting. The GDC directory gives a different Ware County Jail address and phone, while the sheriff site gives the Harris Road sheriff office address and the jail reception path. The sheriff site is the primary local jail source because it is published by the operating agency and includes the current jail population link and operational rules. The GDC directory can be useful background, but jail visits and inmate-service questions should follow sheriff instructions.
Note: Verify custody, bond, and visit approval with Ware County Jail before travel because roster and visit data can change quickly.
