Ware State Prison Overview

Ware State Prison is operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections at 3620 Harris Road in Waycross. GDC identifies the facility as a close-security state prison for adult male felons. It was constructed in 1989 and opened in 1990. The prison is physically in Ware County, but it is not operated by the sheriff, and it does not use the Ware County OffenderIndex jail roster for inmate lookup.

The facility's published capacity is 1,546. Housing details from GDC include eight housing units with 50 double cells each, a 12-bed infirmary, a 150-bed segregation unit, a Fast Track Unit with four 54-bed dormitories, Old Ware with 112 beds, and I Building with four dorms totaling 256 beds. GDC also lists open dormitory and single-cell housing. Those details place Ware State Prison in the state-prison system, where classification, sentence status, and facility assignment are controlled by GDC.

Ware State Prison Capacity

Ware State Prison's capacity is a GDC facility figure and must be kept separate from Ware County Jail's Vera county-jail figures. Close security is a GDC classification for prisoners who may require higher control because of escape risk, assault history, serious detainers, or other security factors. Ware State Prison Visits

Ware State Prison visitation follows GDC rules. Visitors must be approved, and all visitors, including children, must submit an application. Supporting documents may include a photo ID, marriage license, birth certificate, and notarized consent forms. Scheduling is by appointment, and GDC's weekly window for visitation requests runs from 5 AM Monday through 5 PM Wednesday for that week's visit. Ware State Prison also requires the visitor to call at least one day before the visit through the Warden's Secretary.
